私たちの工房があるタイ北部の都市チェンマイは、別名「北の薔薇」とも呼ばれる美しい街です。首都バンコク（ちなみにここは「天使の都」とも称されます。タイの人々はとてもロマンティックで美しい形容をします）に次ぐタイ第二の都市などとも言われますが、人口の数から言えばまだまだ大きな都市はタイ国内にあります。規模からいえばむしろ、落ち着いた小さな地方都市といったほうがしっくりくるでしょう。しかし、かつてここにはランナー王朝の都が置かれ、その歴史と文化と格式から、タイを代表する都市として人々から敬意を払われているのかもしれません。
ここチェンマイには、数百年続く古い伝統的な寺院と、近代的な都市建築が同居しています。ギャラリーやカフェ、レストランなど、ファッショナブルで洗練されたお店の並ぶ通りもあれば、地元の市場や子供たちが裸足で走り回るような活気溢れる路地もあります。都市ならではのハイウェイや車で渋滞する幹線道路もあれば、牛がのんびり水浴びする農村風景もあちこちに見られます。こうした近代都市とふんだんな自然の景色が同居するのが、チェンマイの魅力のひとつかもしれません。
